McPherson, James

A CRIMEAN VETERAN.

Captain James McPherson died at his residence here this morning, aged 73, after a long illness. The deceased served with the 93rd Highlanders throughout the Crimean war, winning the medal with three clasps, and the Turkish medal. He was also in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1857, the Oude campaign in 1858-9, and landed in Auckland in 1861 with the 70th Surrey Regiment.

He served in the Maori war in 1861-5 with that regiment, and the Commissariat Transport Corps; receiving the New Zealand medal. He was the first member of Parliament for Waikato. At the time of his death he had been clerk to the Waikato Council for twenty-eight years, and during that time had also held similar positions in other local bodies. He leaves two unmarried daughters.
