WILLIAM
PETHERN HARTSTONE, aged 15, was on board
Exmouth at the bombardment of
Sebastopol. The captain took the ship too close
and the ship suffered heavy damage and casualties. Afterwards he sailed to
New
Zealand and took part in the Taranaki wars
(1860-1861) where he was wounded in the leg by a blow from a tomahawk resulting
in a permanent limp. Hartstone arrived in Woodville in 1889 and took over the
cheese factory. He died in 1924.
